Prospan 35mg/5ml, syrup for adults and children from 2 years of age, 100ml

Indications: a plant medicine containing ivy leaf extract, used as an expectorant in productive cough (so-called wet cough).

Action: the drug has a secretolytic effect (fluids the residual bronchial secretion), spasmolytic (relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi) and soothes cough. Thanks to these properties, the bronchial mucus in the respiratory tract becomes liquefied and its expectoration is facilitated.

Dosage: orally, shake before use. Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age: take 5ml of syrup 3 times a day (equivalent to 105mg of ivy leaf dry extract per day). Children aged 6 to 11 years: 5 ml of syrup twice a day (equivalent to 70 mg of ivy leaf dry extract per day). Children aged 2 to 5 years: an average of 2.5 ml of syrup is administered twice a day (equivalent to 35 mg of ivy leaf dry extract per day). The duration of treatment depends on the type of symptoms and their severity. Treatment with the drug should last a minimum of 7 days, even with mild inflammation of the respiratory tract. If symptoms persist for more than a week despite the use of the medicinal product, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted

Composition: 100ml of syrup contains: ivy leaf extract 0.7g (5-7.5:1), extraction solvent: ethanol 30% (m/m). The other ingredients (excipients) are: liquid crystallizing sorbitol (E420), potassium sorbitan (E 202), anhydrous citric acid, xanthan gum, cherry flavor, purified water.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity to the active substance or to other plants of the Araliaceae family or to any of the excipients, do not use in children under 2 years of age due to the risk of worsening respiratory symptoms.

Warnings and precautions: consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Prospan. If symptoms persist or symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, purulent or bloody coughing up appear, consult a doctor immediately. Concomitant use of cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan is not recommended without consulting your doctor. Caution is advised when used in patients with gastritis or gastric ulcer. In rare cases, the drug may irritate the mucous membranes. A single dose (5 ml) contains 1.9 g of sorbitol. 2.5 ml of syrup contains 0.963 g of sorbitol and 0.08 bread units. Do not use the drug in patients with rare hereditary fructose intolerance. In this case, treatment should be carried out only after consulting a doctor. Information for diabetics: the drug does not contain sugar and can be used by people with diabetes.

Interactions with other drugs: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other drugs, including over-the-counter drugs. The medicine may be given in combination with other medicines used during therapy, for example with antibiotics. The drug may intensify the effect of agents irritating the gastric mucosa due to the content of saponins.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Studies on the safety of the drug in pregnant women and its effects on fetal development have not been conducted. For this reason, the drug can be used by pregnant and lactating women only if, in the opinion of the doctor, the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the foetus.

Driving and using machines: no adverse effects on the ability to drive motor vehicles, use machines and psychophysical performance have been found.
