Originaire de Madagascar et appelé aussi Cinnamomum camphora ct cinéole, il pousse à létat sauvage dans les forêts tropicales humides et peut atteindre 15 mètres.
Ses feuilles sont ovales, alternes, coriaces et larges, persistantes et brillantes sur la face supérieure, rappelant son appartenance à la famille des Lauracées.
La floraison a lieu de novembre à janvier et fournit une baie très caractéristique.
